About this artwork
A musician stands with his lute cradled against his chest. His face painted in hues of grey. He anticipates his listeners’ reaction. His expression of peace and contentment suggests that this is a moment of pure musical bliss.
The background is an intricate dance of graffiti and complex geometric designs. The graffiti, spray-painted or perhaps etched directly into the wall, are bold and energetic. Geometric shapes, composed of squares, triangles,… and circles, create a sense of movement and rhythm. The graffiti and geometric patterns, in contrast the musician's gray face and striped blue suit.
The painting is in a state of flux, the boundaries between reality and imagination are blurred. The grey and white tones of the face and the colorful background with its graffiti and geometric patterns create a sense of surrealism, as if the musician is performing in a dream-like state.
The painting is an emotive work of art that captures the essence of musical creativity.
Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Nagui's passion for painting blossomed during his college years. While pursuing his medical degree, he concurrently enrolled in the independent fine art study program at the University of Alexandria Atelier. This dual pursuit of art and medicine would profoundly shape his artistic perspective.
His early work quickly gained recognition. In 1973, he held his inaugural solo exhibition at the University Physician's Club, followed by another in 1975 at the prestigious French Cultural Center in Alexandria.
Upon immigrating to the United States, Nagui embarked on a career in psychiatry, a profession he believes has significantly influenced his approach to painting.
Artistic Practice: Nagui maintains a prolific output, annually producing a substantial body of work that includes medium and large-size paintings, alongside numerous smaller pieces and drawings.
