About this artwork
Inspired by Henry Mayhew’s 19th-century book ‘London Labour and the London Poor’, which documented the harsh lives and trades of the city’s most impoverished, I wanted to reimagine some of the etchings and interviews with these people with a contemporary, psychological flair.
This piece, adapted from ‘The Street-Seller of Dogs’ actually depicts the brewing torment of an impoverished man forced to sell his companions—this turmoil, conflict and desperation… reflected in the sickly green of the face and the displaced dizzying feel of the background.
While his troubled expression is anchored with clarity amidst the dynamic turmoil of his body language, the shadowy figures behind him remain a mix of indifferent, disturbed, or too busy in their own lives to offer sympathy. The narrative layers I wanted to convey with this painting hopefully act as a reminder: that things are rarely as they seem at glance, and to try to take some time to leave room for sympathy, compassion and understanding
« I express the truest version of myself as I was, am, and will be in my work. »
