About this artwork
The image is a tonal separation in which the colour areas of the same brightness are grouped together. This technique originally comes from graphic arts (woodcut, screen printing).
Marilyn Monroe was a style icon of pop art. I painted her in this spirit in 1988. Later, the motif seemed too worn out and the depiction too smooth, so I painted over it. I worked glitter into the acrylic emulsion (appearance), then maltreated the face with a "dirty"… glaze (being), which represents her despair and suicide.
This makes the painting look ugly (rough) and the lightness (glamour) is gone.
The words “Monroe Doctrine” (= non-interference by the Americans in European conflicts and an end to all attempts at colonization) are invisibly incorporated into the final varnish.
The painting has an opulent gold frame.
Wolfgang Eberhardt, a passionate painter, discovered his artistic talent through emotional experiences. His figurative works are created through careful use of charcoal, color pigments and binding agents, creating images full of magic and impulse. His art is a bridge of communication, with the aim of reaching the viewer deeply and triggering emotion. With love as his strongest force, he always strives to express true human feelings through his art.
