About this artwork
This red abstract minimalist painting is another of Anne's "cave" inspired pieces.
She lived in New Mexico for a little while. This piece is inspired by the idea of cave dwellings. In this monochrome piece, Anne thought about how it must feel to go from the bright, sunny light outside, to the darkness of a cave. At first, one is "blinded", engulfed in darkness. Soon after, as you begin to acclimate to your surroundings-- the bits of light, or the… relative lighting informs the space and starts to shape it. You go from darkness, to having hints of the shape of the space that you are in. You may have no clue what is before you. It requires a certain amount of faith.
Apart from that "literal" interpretation, there is also the idea of layers, and memory. The bright bit of light in the bottom right corner of the painting can be seen as a spark, or an idea, illumination both literally and symbolically.
« I think art is a way in. It is an equalizer, no matter where you come from, or what language you speak. Now, more than ever, we must recognize that inter-connectedness. »
Anne Cherubim is an artist based in the United States whose paintings have been featured in several solo and group exhibitions nationally. Her works explore themes relating to the environment and stewardship of the planet. However, Cherubim is also fascinated by the essence of a place, rather than a perfect rendering. She favors bold acrylic colors in her creative process.
