About this artwork
Artists have always borrowed from the world around them. Picasso is often linked to the line that good artists copy and great artists steal — but in this case, the theft was gentler.
These Nigella damascena, also known as Devil in the Bush, came from a neighbour’s garden we had admired for months. Often mistaken for weeds, they possess a strange contradiction: soft and delicate at first glance, yet defensive, architectural, almost dangerous up close.…
The composition brings together different flowers from the same small cluster of plants — each one carrying its own posture, tension, and personality. One opens confidently into the space, another feels exposed and fragile, while the seed pod retreats behind its own protective structure.
Captured through ultra-high-resolution scannography, the work preserves every filament, shadow, and imperfection with forensic clarity.
Botanica Lumen is the collaborative studio of Anna Surdacka and Luis Fernandez, bringing together botanical artistry, optical imaging, and material precision. Anna’s instinct for living form and natural composition meets Luis’s background in optics, physics, and ultra-high-resolution imaging, shaped through years developing industrial scanning systems.
Together, they created an original scannographic practice that captures real botanical specimens with extraordinary clarity, tonal depth, and presence. Working against deep black fields, their pieces move beyond vintage botanical illustration, traditional photography, or decorative printmaking, revealing nature as something immersive, architectural, and unexpectedly powerful.
Designed to be admired from afar and discovered up close, each Botanica Lumen work is created as a museum-grade photographic object, built to live with presence for generations.
