About this artwork
This work was created for the First Young Painters Biennale in Cannes in 1989, for which I had been selected. We all had the same format. The theme was "Humor and Revolution." I chose to illustrate it with a world that was beginning to take shape in my imagination and to work with it in light of the proposed theme. It is a hybrid world, half-bird, half-human. Here, the Royalists are heading east, while the Revolutionaries are heading west. There… are many symbols in this work, including some collages with symbolic writing. I chose a textured background (one of the first I created at the time), and the bird, symbolizing liberty, flies towards the infinite sky. The exhibition took place in Cannes, at the Palais des Festivals, where my work was sold.
Chantal Dufour, a self-taught artist with a scientific background, explores painting and the visual arts through a unique career, punctuated by international exhibitions. She favors the line as a poetic writing, alternating mixed techniques, black and white ink and vibrant colors, in a style ranging from the refined to denser compositions. Her universe oscillates between reflection and spontaneity, infused with freedom, humor but also anguish and questions about human existence, arousing in the viewer a dizzying, deep and often contrasting emotion.
