About this artwork
One April morning in the Maasai Mara, we went to a hippo pool with the aim of trying to get some photographs of hippos spraying water. The river was shaded by trees on either side and the sun’s rays filtered through the trees and lit the hippos in the water in very interesting ways. We therefore tried to isolate the hippos instead of photographing them as one big heap and looked for interesting patterns of light falling on them.
We saw a very interesting… side lit scene of a lone hippo surrounded by froth and bubbles generated by a couple of hippos that had just sunk below the surface. The thought immediately struck us that under exposed, it would make for a dramatic image. In post processing we further darkened the image and brought out the froth, which in the light, glistened like diamonds. It reminded us of the Beatles song, “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” and to that effect we have edited the image trying to showcase our hippo “Lucy” surrounded by diamonds.
