About this artwork
Ligea is one of the three sirens named in ancient sources, alongside Parthenope and Leucosia. Unlike later mermaid interpretations, these early sirens were avian figures — creatures of wing, stone, and voice, bound to the cliffs rather than the sea.
In this work, I approached Ligea as the final embodiment of that lineage. She is fully present, grounded, and watchful. Her posture is restrained, her wings folded but intact. There is no seduction in… her gaze, only attention.
Traditionally associated with clarity of voice and the fatal precision of song, Ligea represents the moment when myth is still anchored in place — before dispersion, before silence. Here, she inhabits a threshold between permanence and erosion, between the solidity of stone and the movement of the sea.
This piece belongs to my ongoing Siren Cycle, which revisits classical siren mythology through an academic lens, reinterpreting ancient figures
