About this artwork
Nerithe — Academic Study is directly derived from the abstract work Nerithe. The colour palette, composition, and atmospheric restraint originate in the abstract version, which precedes the figure in every aspect of the process.
This return to the figure is conceived as a moment of plastic research rather than a narrative gesture. Referencing 19th-century academic studies and the tradition of the Grand Tour, I use classical form as a temporary discipline… — a way to test perception, proportion, and restraint.
The figure does not illustrate the abstraction. It emerges from it, as a provisional condensation of forms already present. The body is held, measured, and contained, functioning as a pause within an otherwise abstract trajectory.
This academic study does not resolve the work. It marks a moment of suspension, where abstraction briefly accepts form before continuing its movement elsewhere.
