About this artwork
Broken Desert 4 is a mixed media painting depicting a fractured desert landscape in which mountain-like formations emerge from eroded terrain. Layered textures and cracked surfaces recall arid rock formations and sedimentary strata shaped by extreme climatic conditions.
A self-made modeling paste was used to create natural cracks during the drying process, symbolizing instability and environmental tension. Acrylic paints, acrylic ink and alcohol,… allowing pigments to flow and settle into organic patterns reminiscent of mineral deposits and weathered desert ground. Earthy tones, muted blues, greys, and moss-like hues enhance the impression of a silent, enduring desert landscape.
Created on a recycled canvas, this work later became a new painting titled Strata of Moss and Mind, carrying visible traces of its previous states. In line with my practice of creating emotional landscapes, Broken Desert 4 invites reflection on fragility, resilience, and environmental transformation.
Doreen Gehrke is a self-taught artist and geologist whose scientific background significantly influences her artistic work. Structures, strata, natural processes of formation, and the aesthetic language of the earth are reflected in many of her pieces. This combination of geological knowledge and intuitive painting technique forms the basis for her Emotional Landscapes – atmospheric, often abstract landscapes that depict inner states, moods, and memories rather than real places. The pricing of her artwork is primarily based on the technical and time-related effort of the painting process, while the size of the work plays a secondary role.
