About this artwork
This drawing depicts a young mother with her first baby in a contemporary interior. The title references Berthe Morisot's "The Cradle," evoking the tenderness and intimacy of the early bond between a mother and her child.
Through the interplay of lines and surfaces that blend into one another, I try to show this profound symbiosis between beings, this invisible but very real thread that unites them.
The white paper enhances the contrasts and luminosity… of the whites. The line continues unbroken, enveloping the bodies in a single bubble. Yet, the mother's gaze turns outward: already, she is accompanying her child into the world.
Émilie Vas primarily uses oil paint, watercolor, and drawing, incorporating a rich cultural journey through France, Italy, and Asia into her artistic practice. She employs classical techniques, layering light and shadow, while emphasizing the materiality of the medium, the interplay of solid and void, and contrasts of saturated colors. Through her works, she conveys the fragile and unpredictable beauty of existence, the complexity of the human soul, and the pure hope of childhood.
