About this artwork
In this portrait, I set out to honor Henry Flagler as both a visionary and an icon of Florida’s early development. He stands with dignified confidence, dressed in the refined style of his era, while locomotive No. 153 rises behind him, pushing through lush tropical vegetation. The train symbolizes the completion of his historic Overseas Railroad and the powerful union between industry and the wild Florida landscape.
Using bold colors, crisp lines,… and a pop-art sensibility, I aimed to elevate Flagler into a contemporary cultural symbol while keeping the texture and light grounded in realism. The contrast between the steel of the locomotive and the warmth of the surrounding foliage reflects the tension and harmony of progress.
This painting is not only a tribute to the man but to the era he helped shape — and it is now proudly displayed in the office of the Mayor of Palm Coast FL.
Ettore Bechis, a Turin-born artist working in the United States, expresses his artistic language through painting, set design, and tattoos, combining pop culture experiences with a practical background. He uses a mix of techniques such as acrylics, textures, and layering, alternating figurative realism, graphic energy, and impactful theatrical compositions. His works explode with intense colors, contrasts, and iconic references to rock and pop culture. With a fusion of irony and emotional depth, he seeks to convey energy, identity, and contemporaneity, engaging the viewer in a dynamic and immediate visual narrative.
