About this artwork
In this work, Gastone reflects on the themes of power and social uniformity. Playing cards—symbols of hierarchies and roles—frame a sequence of anonymous figures, all identical, sculpted from the material. The contrast between the bright colors of the kings and queens and the neutrality of the faceless bodies emphasizes the gap between appearance and substance, between those who command and those who obey.
A work that combines irony and depth, capable… of attracting the gaze and inviting reflection.

Gastone Cecconello (Vercelli, 1942) has been working for over sixty years in painting, sculpture, and mixed media. His visual language—based on the figure of the hominid as a metaphor for the human condition—arises from the dialogue between matter and symbol, between the archaic and the contemporary.
He has exhibited in over one hundred solo shows in Italy and abroad: Columbia University in New York, Staatsuniversität Hamburg, the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna, and Galerie Man Arte in Paris. Critic Pierre Restany has written about his work. His career is documented in the monograph Alle origini del mito (Silvana Editoriale, 2012).
At over eighty years old, he still works every day in his studio in Salussola, Biella.
