About this artwork
A deep red background, glitter burning like embers. Above, a light pink field—a grainy texture, almost snow or salt—hosts a single white plaster hominid in its cell: isolated, exposed, different from all the rest. Below, four red hominids lined up along the edge, covered in the same glitter as the background, seemingly indistinguishable. Between the two groups, a purple arrow points upward—toward that unique individual, that cell, that difference.…

Gastone Cecconello (Vercelli, 1942) has been working for over sixty years in painting, sculpture, and mixed media. His visual language—based on the figure of the hominid as a metaphor for the human condition—arises from the dialogue between matter and symbol, between the archaic and the contemporary.
He has exhibited in over one hundred solo shows in Italy and abroad: Columbia University in New York, Staatsuniversität Hamburg, the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna, and Galerie Man Arte in Paris. Critic Pierre Restany has written about his work. His career is documented in the monograph Alle origini del mito (Silvana Editoriale, 2012).
At over eighty years old, he still works every day in his studio in Salussola, Biella.
He has exhibited in over one hundred solo shows in Italy and abroad: Columbia University in New York, Staatsuniversität Hamburg, the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna, and Galerie Man Arte in Paris.
