About this artwork
A face that chooses silence. The head is tilted, the eyelids closed, the mouth compressed: there is no tension, only an absolute suspension from the noise of the world. Cecconello models the plaster with the same essentiality with which the ancient masters sculpted stone—nothing is superfluous, every curve is a choice.

Gastone Cecconello (Vercelli, 1942) has been working for over sixty years in painting, sculpture, and mixed media. His visual language—based on the figure of the hominid as a metaphor for the human condition—arises from the dialogue between matter and symbol, between the archaic and the contemporary.
He has exhibited in over one hundred solo shows in Italy and abroad: Columbia University in New York, Staatsuniversität Hamburg, the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna, and Galerie Man Arte in Paris. Critic Pierre Restany has written about his work. His career is documented in the monograph Alle origini del mito (Silvana Editoriale, 2012).
