About this artwork
In Light Beneath the Surface, transparent layers of turquoise, aqua, and deep blue open up to reveal a still, shimmering color space. As if looking through ice, glass, or water, one gazes into the depths, where reflections of light flash and disappear.
In my intuitive work with encaustic wax, I shape the layers of wax with heat, fuse them together, and then reopen them. Traces of earlier layers remain visible, lending the surface an almost physical… depth. A delicate pink accent provides a warm counterpoint to the coolness of the image.
The work invites the viewer to pause and follow the interplay of light, material, and perception: what lies on the surface, and what is revealed beneath, changes with every glance.

Ingeborg Ludwig, with a solid background in art, primarily uses encaustic, a hot wax technique, and acrylic painting. Her style is process-oriented, abstract, and strongly material-based, characterized by calming organic forms, seamless transitions, and multi-layered surfaces. Her artworks explore the invisible world of emotions and inner landscapes, inviting the viewer on an introspective journey to free themselves from the hustle and bustle of the external world. She addresses realms of change and resonance in a quiet, intuitive way to convey deep, moving emotional states.
