About this artwork
Late afternoon at a dam near Gravelotte in Limpopo. The light was doing what bushveld light does in that last hour - turning everything gold and slightly unreal. Bare winter trees stood at the water's edge, their reflections broken in the surface below.
Then I folded it.
The trees became pillars. The arch between them - already suggested by two leaning trunks - snapped into a perfect gothic vault. The water became a floor. The hanging weaver nests… became lanterns. What had been a quiet waterside scene became a cathedral, complete and certain, that no one had designed and no one had built.
This is what Forms Beneath is about. Not invention. Discovery. The forms were always there - hidden, as if deliberately, for the reward of a different kind of looking.

Ivan Muller is a South African photographer with over 40 years of experience, formally trained at Tshwane University of Technology and recognized with the Ilford Prize for photography.
