A cold, still morning at Rietvlei Dam, south of Pretoria. The water was flat and grey. The willows that line the bank are old and enormous - they have been collapsing into each other for decades, their branches tangled into something almost impenetrable. I stood at the water's edge and looked into the tangle.
Then I folded it.
What came back was a cathedral interior - vaulted, dense, layered beyond counting. And at the base, a single orange arch… - one curved branch catching the only warm light in an otherwise cold scene - became an altar. Small, precise, impossible to miss once seen.
This is what Forms Beneath is about. Not invention. Discovery. The forms were always there - hidden, as if deliberately, for the reward of a different kind of looking.

Ivan Muller is a South African photographer with over 40 years of experience, formally trained at Tshwane University of Technology and recognized with the Ilford Prize for photography. He employs a minimal, observational technique by mirroring natural forms - such as trees and rock faces - along a vertical axis, producing painterly, fine art giclée prints that straddle documentary realism and psychological depth. His artworks evoke a sense of wonder and revelation, inviting viewers to discover hidden symmetries and deeper realities beneath the ordinary surface of the natural world.
