About this artwork
It was a cold morning at Rietvlei Dam, south of Pretoria. Mid-winter. The grass had gone gold and the trees had lost everything - no leaves, no disguise, just structure exposed against a flat grey sky. Two large trees stood close together, leaning slightly toward each other.
Then I folded it.
Two became four. What had been two winter trees became a gate - ancient, ceremonial, guarding something on the other side of the frame. A single distant tree… appeared perfectly centred in the gap between them, as if placed there on purpose. Nothing was placed there on purpose.
This is what Forms Beneath is about. Not invention. Discovery. The forms were always there - hidden, as if deliberately, for the reward of a different kind of looking.
