About this artwork
This willow grows at the edge of Rietvlei Dam, south of Pretoria - a vast, ancient thing that has been collapsing slowly into itself for years. Late afternoon light in winter turned every branch warm gold against a pale blue sky.
Then I folded it.
What came back was a creature - something between a forest deity and an old man who had been standing in one place so long he had become the landscape. The cascading branches became a cloak. The gnarled… trunk became a face. The whole thing radiated a patience that felt geological.
This is what Forms Beneath is about. Not invention. Discovery. The forms were always there - hidden, as if deliberately, for the reward of a different kind of looking.
