About this artwork
There is an old water-filled quarry on Cornwall Hill Estate, south of Pretoria. The rock walls are ancient and dark. A single bare tree grows at the edge, catching the last of the afternoon light while everything behind it - cliff face, still water - sits in cold shadow.
Then I folded it.
The tree became a figure standing in its own light, surrounded by darkness on all sides. The quarry walls closed in symmetrically, forming a chamber. The black… water below became a mirror, doubling the depth. What had been a solitary tree in an abandoned quarry became something that had always been there — a keeper of the place, an oracle speaking from the boundary between light and dark, between the surface and what lies beneath it.
This is what Forms Beneath is about. Not invention. Discovery. The forms were always there - hidden, as if deliberately, for the reward of a different kind of looking.
