About this artwork
WHEN I AM TALL is an artwork from the HUMAN STRIPES series. The work shows a little boy with aviator glasses dreaming of what he wants to be when he grows up. Depicted with a red biplane aircraft. The work of art was painted and taped by the artist in her studio and completed with visitors to the vernissage in Schwäbisch Hall in October 2022.
Karin Döring's aim is to use her art to go beyond previous art experiences. Making creative processes tangible… and tangible for people. Previous rules, such as not touching works of art, are simply thrown overboard. Each of the tapes stands for one of its own limits, which are bravely tackled and removed. It is not enough for her that people just look at art, you only feel the art by perceiving it haptically, getting involved, removing layer by layer, tape by tape, taking something in order to create a new, connecting work together.
« The more curious we are, the more creative we become »
My work explores the tension between identity, body, concealment, and transformation. I don't understand painting as a representation, but as a space for inner movement. As a place where that which cannot be captured becomes visible.
I work in series that develop organically during the process, not from pre-existing concepts. Material plays a central role: acrylic, texture, gold leaf, platinum, and mixed media are not merely decorative elements, but carriers of meaning.
Concealment is not a retreat. It is a deliberate act. It creates distance, protection, and a new way of reading. Faces and bodies do not appear as surfaces for identification, but rather as spaces for projection. I understand identity not as a state, but as a process, characterized by the tension between visibility and withdrawal.
