About this artwork
Every work of art should make a statement. This statement may concern the world, but it can also be quite personal. Here, the title alone reveals that we are dealing with a purely private revelation.
If all my paintings are "hymns to the beauty of creation," this work is a hymn to my destiny flower, the camellia. It has defined my life and earned me the nickname "Lady of the Camellias of Lake Maggiore."
The composition leads into a camellia park,… enclosing it with leaning trees. A profusion of blossoms from vibrant hybrids rises gently into the distance. These, like the still-winter trees in the center of the picture, are almost entirely watercolored. The beloved camellias in the foreground, on the other hand, are strongly contoured. They evoke the nostalgia of planting, tending, and caring.
But it is the dreamlike transparency and divine beauty of "Camelia Davis" that keeps me within.
