“Noise” is a hand-pulled linocut reinterpreting Antonello da Messina’s St. Jerome in His Study through the lens of our digital age. In the Renaissance painting, Jerome experiences a quiet “aha” moment in a sacred Gothic interior, accompanied by the lion that symbolizes clarity and devotion.
In my version, this contemplative space is disrupted. The figure is carved out and replaced with dense, aggressive lines — visual “noise” echoing the overload… of digital information that fractures our ability to think clearly. Screens surround the scene, while the once-gentle lion appears as a gargoyle-like demon watching from above.
The work reflects my interest in sacred spaces, architecture, and the fragile interior world we try to protect. Noise is a meditation on knowledge, technology, and the struggle to maintain clarity and self-growth amid constant distraction.
Kaya Heyman is a painter and printmaker with a foundation in architecture, working intuitively across drawing, painting, and linocut printmaking. She explores abstraction and symbolism, layering inks and mixed media with expressive, meditative techniques that allow intuition and subconscious imagery to surface. Her art embodies the cycles of transformation in the natural world and seeks to awaken personal reflection, wonder, and a sense of inner renewal in her viewers.
