Glass Prayers
A single glass wind chime hangs beneath the eaves of Kunitama Shrine in Nakoso, Iwaki, Fukushima. The paper strip below it reads natsumode - the summer shrine visit - and it is caught mid-sway, bent by a movement of air that lasted a second. Behind it, a woven bamboo blind; in front, moss-wrapped kokedama spheres falling out of focus.
Photographed on a Leica M6 TTL with Ilford HP5+, wide open, working close so the eye settles on one… bell and lets the rest become suggestion. A blurred arm passes through the background - someone walking the shrine path, left in deliberately.
A wind chime exists to be heard. Photographed, it gives you everything but the sound. Hand-developed in my darkroom on Ilford archival fiber paper, signed, open edition.
