This is a miniature, framed, decorative painting of a peacock, made using traditional, medieval European painting techniques.
The plumage of the peacock is painted in translucent ultramarine blue and pthalo green, making it glow over the sheen of the gold beneath. The background, water-gilded with two layers of 24 karat gold leaf, has been punched along the feathers so that they shimmer in the light.
The panel and fixed frame are in high quality,… solid oak. The face has been coated with white gesso and the areas to be gilded then laid with red bole (a kind of clay). The paint has been made by hand-grinding pure, dry pigments in egg yolk and water. The frame is painted white.
The dimensions given include the frame, which is fixed and forms part of the painting. The image itself is 9cm x 9cm. The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and has a d-ring attached so that it is ready to hang. It can also be displayed on a mini easel, for example on a shelf or desk.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
