About this artwork
This work will become available after my exhibition in autumn 2026.
This drawing, made in pen and black ink on white watercolour paper, is closely based on the preparatory drawing made for 'Siesta', an egg tempera painting by the artist. It shows two mice curled up together to sleep in the grass.
The artist's cat, Lolly, often curls up to sleep on a cushion in her studio while she works, bringing a profound sense of calm and well-being. This picture… aims to bring the same restfulness and contentment to the viewer.
Cross-hatching, following the forms, has been used to gently suggest volume, while still allowing beauty of line, in the reach of the grass and the sweep of the tails, to take pride of place.
The drawing is in black ink on a 20cm x 20cm sheet of Hahnemule natural white, acid free, 300g/m2, hot pressed, watercolour paper. It is initialled in the lower right.

Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
