About this artwork
In this painting, two mice cross paths amongst golden ears of wheat.
During the strange calm of the coronavirus lockdown, our minds are invited to focus on the increase in activity, hidden from us, in hedgerows, woods and fields, where animals take advantage of our absence.
The ears of wheat are modelled in pastiglia, standing proud of the surface and gilded. They are placed on a dark background of azurite blue, a pigment made from a semi-precious… stone, laid over black. The mice are painted in plain, earth colours to contrast with their rich surroundings.
Lara Broecke has used traditional materials and techniques for this painting, including an oak panel, water gilding and egg tempera paint hand-made from pigments ground in egg yolk.
The dimensions given include a 5mm wooden border around the edge of the painting. The painting is signed and dated on the back and there is a hook attached so that it is ready to hang.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
