I made this egg tempera painting after reading Gaspard Koenig's book, 'Humus', which seemed to address the same ideas concerning the relationship between humanity and nature as I do in my work, and which focuses on earthworms.
I had also recently visited the musée des arts et metiers in Paris, which is full of old scientific instruments, charting man's attempts to understand the world, when I began painting, .
All of this came together with a sketch… of a toad, which I had recently made. The formlessness of the toad resists definition and symbolises the futility of man's efforts to master the world through measurement and classification. The toad's mild interest in a fly buzzing near it's nose shows natures complete disinterest in relation to man's efforts to understand it.
The painting is in hand made egg tempera paint and gold leaf on a gessoed wood panel. It has a fixed wooden frame, which is included in the given dimensions. The dimensions of the image are 45cm x 12cm.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
