About this artwork
This predominantly green and gold painting was made using medieval techniques - pigments ground in egg yolk tempera and gold leaf on an oak panel prepared with a gesso ground. The decorative leaves were created by scratching through the green paint to reveal the gold beneath. The rays emanating from the crucifix are incised into the gold leaf, making them glitter as the light changes.
The painting was inspired by the early Italian artist, Pisanello's… painting of 'The Vision of Saint Eustace' in the National Gallery, London.
Saint Eustace is hunting and follows a stag into a forest, where a crucifix appears between its antlers and it speaks in the voice of Christ. This painting shows the forest animals, including a fox, hedgehogs and a badger, gathering to wonder at the miraculous deer, who stares out of the panel at the viewer. The crucifix sits uncomfortably on the stag's head, perhaps implying that this human God is imposing itself on a previously harmonious natural world.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
