About this artwork
This is my third painting in the river series, which began with a Plein air work on the banks of the Streamstown River in Thoor, Ballylee in July 2025. This is the place where WB Yeats spent a lot of his life and it’s a beautiful idyllic place. From the day that I spent painting there, and the peace, tranquility and sense of belonging I felt while painting, I’ve been asking myself why and in particular, why rivers?
Part of the answer lies in memory.… We had a river running through our childhood garden, where my siblings and I spent summers paddling in its freezing current, even as our mother watched and worried from the kitchen window. The river was our playground, my natural environment, and it has never left me.
My enquiry continues. Each painting gives me another glimpse into the depths, rivers bring me calmness, reflection, a sense of belonging but also a reminder that nothing is ever fixed - their surfaces change yet something timeless flows beneath - that steadies me.
Maureen Connolly is a painter and visual artist whose lifelong, non-linear art education spans formal study, self-directed exploration, and a deep commitment to mixed media, including oil, watercolour, acrylic, ink, and charcoal. Her intuitive, fluid technique weaves together plein air landscapes, layered abstraction, and mark-making, blurring boundaries between figuration and abstraction. Her work resonates with themes of nature’s necessity and feminine experience, conveying profound restoration, grace, and the deeply felt truth that she is part of the living world she paints.
