Fourth in my river series and a continuation of my exploration into the depths. The series started with a Plein air study by the banks of the Steamstown River in Thoor, Ballylee, the home of the Irish poet WB Yeats.
In this piece I was drawn to a darker stretch of the river, where the water stills and the light has to struggle through the overgrowth. But even there flashes of copper and yellow break through - a quiet smoldering beneath the surface.… Although this painting started from a photo, at some point I left the photo and chose to explore my own intuitive response to what was happening on the surface; at some points increasing the intensity of the colour and others darkening the darks.
Th painting is on archival paper but will be glued to canvas and framed, if requested.
Maureen Connolly is a painter and visual artist whose lifelong, non-linear art education spans formal study, self-directed exploration, and a deep commitment to mixed media, including oil, watercolour, acrylic, ink, and charcoal. Her intuitive, fluid technique weaves together plein air landscapes, layered abstraction, and mark-making, blurring boundaries between figuration and abstraction. Her work resonates with themes of nature’s necessity and feminine experience, conveying profound restoration, grace, and the deeply felt truth that she is part of the living world she paints.
