About this artwork
Fifth in my river series. There was a particular spot on the river where a single bough hung over and caught the sunlight - gleaming above while casting a dark shadow underneath. The shadow contrasted an intense blue in the water while the shadow had hints of copper that almost escaped me. Again I started with a photo but quickly left it behind , following instinct and feeling rather than detail. Nothing is clearly drawn , everything is felt in the…
scene. It is painted on archival paper, glued to a stretched canvas and framed, if requested.

Maureen Connolly is a painter and visual artist whose lifelong, non-linear art education spans formal study, self-directed exploration, and a deep commitment to mixed media, including oil, watercolour, acrylic, ink, and charcoal. Her intuitive, fluid technique weaves together plein air landscapes, layered abstraction, and mark-making, blurring boundaries between figuration and abstraction. Her work resonates with themes of nature’s necessity and feminine experience, conveying profound restoration, grace, and the deeply felt truth that she is part of the living world she paints.
