About this artwork
A painting of a slice of semi-detached Suburbia in the Spring or Summer time, not a representation of any specific place but mostly a product of the artist's own imagination. He began this painting in 2011 but didn't finish it to his satisfaction until 2020. Each time he returned to it the artist would add new details and maybe alter occasional specific areas. Consequently, there's a wealth of detail in there and the more you look at it the more…
things you are inclined to find including incidental narratives involving the various figures dotted around here and there. The over all effect creates a quasi-naïve, peaceful and idyllic impression but closer inspection may reveal a sinister element beneath that surface veneer. Presently unavailable due to being exhibited until Feb 2027

« I am more interested in capturing emotion than representation. When I paint my landscapes, I become a sort of nympholeptic camera. »
Michael Gutteridge is a British painter whose works have been extensively exhibited throughout the United Kingdom. His cityscapes combine diverse influences and involve spontaneous forms of distortion expressed via color, proportion, perspective, and an incongruous juxtaposition of styles. Often, Gutteridge endeavors to convey existentially disorientating feelings as well as other types of emotion and general sensual vibrancy. He creates using acrylics and ink on wood.
