About this artwork
For the past two decades, the central theme of my work has revolved around the essence of the concept of identity.
What is identity? How do we recognize what we see? And how can we be certain that what we recognize is truly what we believe it to be?
After years of distilling visual information to its core, I’ve come to the realization that recognition is emotional rather than absolute — it shifts according to our mood and state of mind in the moment.…
This painting is part of a broader series in which I explored the faces of iconic figures such as Amy Winehouse, Frida Kahlo, Marilyn Monroe, Bob Marley, David Bowie, Charlie Chaplin, and many others. My aim was to reduce each portrait to its most essential form, to the point where the image becomes nearly abstract.
Each figure was the subject of multiple paintings, a process that gradually led me to this level of abstraction.
