About this artwork
Chile. January 2019.
During my trip to Chile, my mother's homeland, I stayed in my aunt's apartment in Concón. It's a seaside town where tall buildings are constantly springing up to admire the Pacific Ocean. It's the beginning of summer. The sky is blue, the sun blazing.
From the balcony, I witness this scene. A child is riding her bike, then falls. By the time I get my film camera out, she's already in the arms of what appears to be her grandmother.… A maternal, protective figure. She seems to be comforting her as much as shielding her from the blazing sun, or even from the wild drop below the esplanade.
"Sunburn" is a small burn under the summer sky. A wound quickly forgotten.
