I discover the bay of Valparaiso aboard a lancha, one of those motorboats that cross the port packed with tourists. There are about thirty of us listening to our guide. He jumps aboard, as if he were coming home.
His voice rises above the engine noise. He jokes, calls out to people, tells stories. Everything seems natural. Behind him, that cross. The boat becomes a stage with him, before his altar.
He speaks of the city… with contagious energy, as if he were a part of it himself. His face, his gestures, the way he occupies space tell the story of Valparaiso as much as his words. Sitting in the back, I watch him bring this little floating world to life. I creep closer and press the shutter.
In this port, once among the most important in South America, it embodies something larger than itself: a city turned towards the sea, popular, proud and vibrant.
