About this artwork
I created this piece, My Name is Pearl, using acrylic on paper, based on my observation about a young girl I met at a small African Museum in Belgium. Her beauty moved me so much, I had to dare in approaching her, who was contemplating an historical mask. When I introduced myself to her as an artist, she looked at me with a touch of arrogance from my shoes to my head. I kept a silent composure until she finished to scan me thoroughly. Then, I asked…
her: What is your name? My Name is Pearl, she replied. I said that I never heard such a name before. This is a beautiful name though, like yourself, I continued. Thank you, she replied. As soon as I got back to the hotel, where I stayed, I quickly grabbed a pencil and tried to make a grisaille of Pearl at a different perspective, in a different creative world. This piece celebrates the beauty, strength, resilience, and grace of the young Pearl in a perpetual snowing day. With a mental picture of her in my mind, I paint Pearl like a poem.
