During a visit to the North Frisian island of Amrum in 1991, I first noticed a restrained stone circle in the dune landscape, centered on a seemingly disordered pile of stones, in front of a pyramid-shaped, very high dune. Only a drifting cloud, following the line of the path across the dune, reminds me, with its movement, that I am in the here and now.
This archaic staging fascinated me so much that I absolutely wanted to capture this special impression… in a drawing – in such a large format.
So, after several studies, I drew the sublime overall structure with colored and graphite pencils on a primed wooden panel in a balanced square format measuring 120 x 120 cm. Twenty-three years later, I reworked the scene again with more intense colors and accentuation, finally completing the work in 2024. It became a collection of strength, calm, and energy.
As a trained graphic designer, Norbert Städele primarily uses painting and drawing techniques in his artistic work. With a realistic style and detailed colored pencil drawings, he carefully illustrates his observations of the world. Layers of hatching create intensified colors that bring his themes to life. Städele's art expresses human relationships and social injustices through meticulous observation. He also explores the phenomena of light and color and the traces of human intervention in nature. His work is therefore a haunting, intense communication of his profound engagement with the world.
