About this artwork
The woman’s gaze, unsentimental & sharp, carries the residue of decades spent being observed, assessed, dismissed, desired, judged. Yet, still remaining.
She is not the subject.
She is the witness.
The others in motion become echoes of what she has already lived through: youth, pretense, & quiet… endurance.
Her stare breaks through them. It’s filled with memories breaking through the noise of time.
There is a strong sense of erosion of empathy that modern life demands.
The kind that asks women to move endlessly forward, yet never invites them to rest.
The cigarette, a small defiance, becomes a tether to the self & an assertion of interiority.
It is not a rebellion anymore. This is the aftermath.
She is no longer looks to be understood.
She is there to remind the world that she still sees.
