In this work, charcoal and acrylic merge on paper in a visceral struggle. "Trench" is not a physical place, but a state of the human soul subjected to internal pressure and siege. The piece is dramatically divided, presenting a fragmented and suffocating portrait, almost devoured by a chiaroscuro that evokes confusion, fear, and the silent resistance of a cornered consciousness. A lower band of absolute black rises like an insurmountable wall of… silence and emptiness, representing oblivion and the limit of the unspeakable. Yet, on the edge of this abyss, small white crosses emerge, fragile and luminous, marking the trace of vulnerability and hope in a hostile environment. This piece invites us to contemplate our own vulnerability; it captures the dignity of resistance and the painful beauty of deep introspection, for the soul seeking dialogue with its own strength and its own limitations.
Oscar Azula primarily uses charcoal and explores the figure and landscape, drawing on his extensive academic training in Colombia and Mexico. He experiments with the interplay of light and shadow, as well as contrasting materials and colors, achieving visual balances that embody the contradictions of contemporary life. His work conveys a powerful reflection on our essential connection to nature and seeks to awaken in the viewer a sense of belonging, respect, and vitality in the face of the tangible and human.
