About this artwork
This work on paper establishes a dialogue with György Ligeti's piano piece "En Suspens" (Piano Studies, Book 2, No. 11)
"Pending" (waiting, suspended) is in direct dialogue with Ligeti's "En suspens." In my work, this suspension manifests itself through a composition that refuses resolution. The geometric forms—brightly colored rectangles (red, peach pink) and black frames—are arranged in a precarious balance, while the black ink blots seem frozen… in mid-motion, like notes suspended before their resolution.
In Ligeti's work, "En suspens" plays with rhythmic structures that always seem on the verge of disintegrating. I wanted to establish a visual parallel: geometric forms coexist with spontaneous and uncontrollable splashes of ink. This tension between construction and deconstruction evokes Ligeti's micropolyphony, where order emerges from apparent chaos.

« My research takes the direction of "parasitic" minimalism. I claim the expression of a rigorous geometric structure endangered by the soft and hazardous trace of the brush. »
Originally from the tranquil scenery of Switzerland, Patrick Piccinelli set forth on an enriching academic journey that took him to the distinguished corridors of ECAL (University of Art and Design, Lausanne, Switzerland), a stronghold of artistic brilliance on the global frontier. The respected tradition of flawless typography for which Switzerland is famed, coupled with the deep-seated influences of Swiss graphic design, known for its austere, minimalistic, and refined aesthetics, significantly guided Piccinelli’s artistic path. His palette is firmly rooted in geometric minimalism, a stylistic reverberation reminiscent of the illustrious “Zürich movement.” This era of artistic zeal was pioneered by notable figures such as Max Bill, Richard Paul Lohse, and Verena Loewenberg, luminaries who were the frontrunners of geometric or constructed artistry. His works have recently been acquired by collectors in the United States, Japan and Europe.
