About this artwork
The White Heron stands proud, and symbolises strength and peace. The pulsating aura of calm and harmony blends with mankind and all that surrounds. The egrets flock towards the castle as if drawn to a mother who offers salvation.
Himeji Castle is a complex in the city of Himeji, Japan, and is also known as Hakuro-Jō or Shirasagi-Jō meaning 'White Egret Castle' or 'White Heron Castle' because of its white plaster walls and appearance resembling a… white heron taking flight. It stands as a monument not only to the craftsmanship, but also to the Japanese concept of harmony between man and nature.
I became fascinated with the architecture and narrative of the castle, so I developed it further as a piece that evoked this story of harmony. I wanted to show the harmony moving as a collaborative energy, with the building coming to life as the gigantic bird, and it's harmony blending with both the surrounding nature and people, becoming like a living deity of hope and peace.
« I express the truest version of myself as I was, am, and will be in my work. »
