About this artwork
WAVELENGTH explored the absence and presence of movement from two perspectives: active stillness as opposed to passive immobility and involuntary pulsations/waves as opposed to deliberate displacements. Thematically, the series dealt with coded gestures, enigmatic messages and missed signals and the ambiguity / confusion they inevitably provoke.
Photography has the ability to tell a truth and various lies. As visually precise as any image may be,… it is always open to subjective interpretation. It is in this sense that it is truly realistic, reflecting as it does the inevitable ambiguity of its messaging. What exactly is happening in this image? Is it a protest, a choir, are all three persons in synch, is one being left behind? In the absence of audio, it is impossible to decode with a high degree of accuracy and yet interpret we shall.
