About this artwork
Before I had a name for what I was chasing, I had birches. I built this piece from a photograph of a birch stand, transferred over a bed of crackle paste on a treated panel, so the surface itself would fracture as the image settled into it. The cracks run through the trunks like something the tree already knew about time.
I made this during a body of work I called Sustain, twenty-five pieces thinking about endurance, about what holds and what gives… way. That question sat underneath the birches long before I had language for Ipseity, the enduring self beneath change. This piece belongs to that earlier chapter, made in 2013 for my 2016 debut show, and it has not stopped speaking to what I am painting now. My large-scale piece Quietude, shown in About Time in 2026, grew from exactly this seed.
I never titled it. Some things are better left as they are, unnamed and quietly insistent.

I paint what I feel. After a life in finance, the palette knife became my primary way of speaking, plainly, without ornament. My subject is land, sea, and sky, held less as record than as memory of standing inside them.
I work in oils, building surface until it holds weight, something to be touched as much as seen, according to those who collect my work. Whether the canvas is small enough to hold in one hand or large enough to walk into, the intention doesn't change: a place that is as much interior as it is geographical.
In my mid-70s, I look for Self in the work, a thing being entirely itself, answerable to no one. The work says what I couldn't otherwise say. What you find in it is yours.
