In this oil painting, a violet field stretches under a pale sky, its textures formed entirely by a palette knife and then highlighted with a brush. A rust-coloured streak in the middle ground subtly disrupts the calm, like a trace of memory resurfacing. The heather here is both literal and metaphorical—signalling solitude, wildness, and endurance. The “blood” in the title isn't meant as violence, but as presence—what remains, what seeps into the… land, what shapes the self quietly over time. As part of my Ipseity series, this piece reflects how landscapes, like people, carry the hidden marks of what they’ve endured. Framed under glass in a black floating frame, the painting is gently elevated from its backing—inviting close attention, like a fragment of the past preserved. The main photo, taken on the easel, echoes how I’ve traditionally presented my miniatures, both on my website and in earlier work, and highlights the concept behind each piece.
Though I am creating art, I am evoking an emotion. This has guided fifteen years of practice. Bob's work prioritises the felt experience over representation, capturing atmospheric depth that moves between tranquillity, longing, and awe. You do not simply look at these paintings. You enter them. Working with a knife, his self-taught mastery of Impasto produces surfaces that are sculpturesque, tactile, and alive. Expansive paintings and intimate miniatures share the same driving force, a sense of place that is as much interior as it is geographical. Landscapes and seascapes become the language. Emotion is what they say. In his seventh decade, Venafro has arrived at Ipseity, absolute selfhood, hard-earned and uncompromising. Drawing from a life in finance before the knife became his primary language, he brings something rare to the canvas. The story he is painting is his emotion. And yours, to discover. I'm discontinuing my signature on the front of the work. www.venafrobob.com
