The earth keeps its own memory—in stone, colour, and silence. I paint to listen to what remains. Done during the corona virus lockdown listening to my inner voice, wathcing TV, and walking on our mountain trees structure of the rock formation were ever present.
When I painted What the Earth Remembers, I was drawn to how raw texture can speak its own language. Working entirely with knives, I pushed the paint into ridges and valleys, letting it mimic… the slow erosion and layering that shape our planet. Beneath those gestures lies an unspoken memory — of fire, mineral, and light — as though the Earth itself were keeping a record of everything it has endured.
I often think of painting as a form of geology — each layer a moment suspended in time, each mark a trace of movement and thought. In that sense, this work continues my exploration of how nature’s processes mirror our own: constant, weathered, and quietly alive.
Though I am creating art, I am evoking an emotion. This has guided fifteen years of practice. Bob's work prioritises the felt experience over representation, capturing atmospheric depth that moves between tranquillity, longing, and awe. You do not simply look at these paintings. You enter them. Working with a knife, his self-taught mastery of Impasto produces surfaces that are sculpturesque, tactile, and alive. Expansive paintings and intimate miniatures share the same driving force, a sense of place that is as much interior as it is geographical. Landscapes and seascapes become the language. Emotion is what they say. In his seventh decade, Venafro has arrived at Ipseity, absolute selfhood, hard-earned and uncompromising. Drawing from a life in finance before the knife became his primary language, he brings something rare to the canvas. The story he is painting is his emotion. And yours, to discover. I'm discontinuing my signature on the front of the work. www.venafrobob.com
