Painted in a single intuitive session, Impression of Instinct captures the moment where thought gives way to impulse — when gesture, colour, and texture take command. Built with layered impasto, the surface invites touch as much as sight, evoking a living hillside alive with shifting light. The palette, rooted in ochres, greens, and earthen orange, reflects the quiet strength of nature’s transitions — those passages between certainty and release.…
This work emerged without preconception, guided only by movement and response — the hand leading the mind. In that sense, it belongs to the larger dialogue in my practice about ipseity — the self as a process of becoming. Here, instinct itself is the subject: the moment when a painter ceases to describe and begins to feel.
Framed under glass in a black floating frame, the painting is gently elevated from its backing, emphasising its tactile surface and sense of quiet presence.
