About this artwork
The image emerges from movement prior to form. On the still unstretched, white-primed canvas, I synchronously draw a field of intersecting wavy lines with both hands – without a finished image, guided by trust in the process. The canvas is then stretched onto the frame. I spray on a thin layer of luminous flame red with a soft, diffuse transition, followed by blue, the spray pattern of which I vary from fine to coarse. I intervene in the fresh paint… with charcoal and chalk; abrasion and removal reveal depth. Further layers thicken the surface, a pair of lines with an etching needle adds precision. The impression remains too pleasing to me. I darken the blue edge with ultramarine, lift the red with orange. Glossy areas and a disturbance remain visible. Instead of correction, I add bars of gray made from ash and dark red. In this way, the disturbance becomes a new equilibrium – a dream of waves.
Rupert Bronner, an architect by training, is a gifted painter, draftsman, and photographer whose artistic focus is on the transition between architecture and fine art. With intuitive freedom and a risky balancing act, he employs bold color choices and material qualities, using his drawings as a guide for his hauntingly abstract oil and acrylic works. His art is a thrilling journey of discovery and a communication of his inner stance, conveying an exhilarating sense of liberation from the constraints of reality.
