Location: Lake Abraham, Canada
Lake Abraham extends over an area of 54 square kilometres, it lies on the edge of Banff National Park. The plants covering the lake floor rot and emit methane gas. A spectacular phenomenon can be observed when the lake freezes over in winter. As it becomes progressively thicker, the ice sheet captures the gas in the form of bubbles, which pile up to form columns between the countless layers of ice, creating an unreal… landscape of frozen bubbles. Icy temperatures and strong winds ensure that the ice is crystal clear, transforming the bubbles and cracks into a supernatural work of art.
It was still dark the next morning as I stood on the shores of the lake. At that moment the minus 30 degrees Celsius felt as bitterly cold as they sound. I walked slowly out onto the frozen lake, guided by the light of my head torch.
